Information Service

The Information Service is open to anyone with an interest in accountancy, taxation or related subjects – this can be ICAS members or students; members of other accountancy bodies; students or academics in accountancy or related fields; or members of the public.

Situated on the ground floor of CA House, 21 Haymarket Yards, Edinburgh EH12 5BH, the Information Service is open from 9.00 am – 5.00pm, Monday to Friday. Enquiries may be made in person, by telephone to +44 (0)131 347 0138, by e-mail to infoservice@icas.org.uk , or by fax to +44 (0)131 347 0105.


Lending Stock

The Information Service has books on accountancy, taxation, auditing, financial reporting, company law, management skills and specialist subjects. The catalogue can be searched online. Books can be borrowed by ICAS members and ICAS students, and under reciprocal agreements for members of selected other accountancy bodies and CIOT members.

Other enquirers may borrow books if they show photographic ID and proof of address. This includes all bona fide researchers, University students and members of the public who are looking for information on accountancy, tax or other related issues. Items can be posted out to those who can’t visit CA House in person. Suggestions for new stock are welcome and should be e-mailed to the Information Service .

CA Knowledge

Our new Current Awareness Bulletin CA Knowledge Login requiredis available exclusively to ICAS members. Bringing you the best articles from leading journals every month, the service aims to save you time by selecting the month’s sharpest news and analysis of the main stories and trends, helping to keep you up-to-date.


Journals

Over 100 periodicals on accountancy, taxation and finance with historical holdings for major accountancy bodies may be consulted in the Information Service. ICAS members can also access a large number of journals electronically from the members’ area of the ICAS website using EBSCO's Business Source Corporate database (see below for details).


EBSCO Business Source Corporate

ICAS members can access EBSCO Business Source Corporate Login requiredafter logging into the members’ area of the ICAS website. It contains approximately three thousand magazines and journals - two hundred dealing specifically with accounting and tax as well as many general management journals. The majority of the publications have full text articles available either as PDF or HTML. Please e-mail us for a help-sheet or further information, or search the database here .


LexisNexis Butterworths Online

This database can be searched by the Information Service staff on behalf of members and the results emailed. It includes the full text of tax cases, a wide range of Tolleys and Butterworths reference material and journal articles on taxation as well as material on pensions, insolvency, accounting and law. Please e-mail us for further information.


CCH Information Online

This database can be searched by the Information Service on behalf of members and includes a range of sources which are potentially useful for accountants including UK GAAP 2007; Directors responsibilities and liabilities; accounting and auditing guides for specific industries; and company legislation. It also includes Business Focus Reports - these reports are an introduction to over 90 trades, businesses and professions. They provide a sector overview, start-up information, legislation & regulation, performance indicators, and accountancy matters.


Factiva online

This database can be searched by the Information Service staff on behalf of members and it contains international newspaper, journal articles, newswires and company information.


Securities Taxation UK & Irish Service

Staff can provide a small number of Capital Gains Tax requests covering 1982/83 to 2008/09 and Dividend & Interest requests covering 1995/96 to 2008/09. Historical and current share price requests can also be answered.


Historical Collections

The Information Service retains historical collections of Law Reports, Tax Cases, Statutes and textbooks and periodicals relating to accountancy which can be consulted in-house. Also available is a complete set of the ICAS journal CA Magazine , formerly The Accountants’ Magazine , which started in 1897. This may be of interest to people researching their family history who have accountants in their family.

A collection of Antiquarian Books on accountancy from 1494 to 1930 is maintained by the Institute but is held on deposit in the National Library of Scotland in Edinburgh. The collection includes first and second editions of Luca Pacioli’s “Summa de Arithmetica, Geometria Proportione & Proportionalita” from 1494 and 1523 respectively. Access to the collection is permitted in accordance with the rules of the National Library. The Rare Books division can be contacted by telephoning +44 (0)131 623 3899 or by e-mail .

The historical records of the Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen Societies, which together formed the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland, are held on deposit in the National Archives of Scotland in Edinburgh.
