Investor relations is a multi-disciplinary management function that has become increasingly prominent in the latter part of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century. It is part of a company's financial reporting and business communication strategy. The practice of investor relations requires knowledge of accounting, finance, management, communications, marketing and law. Investor relations practitioners around the world have formed professional associations to further the development of their discipline. This trend started in the US and moved to the UK and then on to other countries in Europe.
This project sought to find out the extent to which investor relations has become established within leading companies in Europe. Apart from discovering what companies were doing it was also considered important to obtain opinions about the value of the investor relations function. Particular attention was paid to questions about the use of the Internet as this is a relatively recent innovation that is increasingly being used for financial reporting and investor relations purposes.
