The Financial Services and Markets Act 2000 unified the regulation of the financial services industry under one regulator, the Financial Services Authority.Previously, regulation was conducted under separate Acts for each sector of the financial services industry.The FSA assumed its full powers with effect from 1 December 2001, a date referred to as N2, and is responsible inter alia for the regulation of banks, building societies, insurers and friendly societies.
