Women of ICAS Reaching the Top: The Demise of the Glass Ceiling

Researchers: Gammie; Gammie; Matson; Duncan

The Report

Despite the considerable increase in women joining the accountancy profession, there is still a discrepancy in the number of women reaching the top, compared to their male counterparts. This report seeks to address to what extent the glass ceiling remains in force in professional accounting firms and makes recommendations on how any inequality could be removed.

The authors find that there continues to be a perception of a macho culture of long hours and informal male networks in operation within professional firms and that the glass ceiling remains in force.

They make several recommendations targeted at: individuals who have successfully reached the top and who are in a position of influence; firms in terms of their policies and practices; and professional bodies in terms of facilitation for women to pave the way for progress.
