HMRC Signs Contracts with Debt Collection Agencies

Debt collection agencies will be used by HM Revenue & Customs during 2010-11 to collect an additional £140m of tax debt.

New approach is designed to boost HMRC’s debt collection capacity

HMRC has announced that it will use private sector debt collection agencies during 2010-11 to collect an additional £140m of tax debt.

Contracts have been signed with:

  • Commercial Collection Services Ltd
  • Credit Solutions Ltd
  • Fairfax Solicitors Ltd
  • iQor Recovery Services Ltd

An HMRC announcement about the new arrangement can be found here:

The recent National Audit Office report on HMRC’s Accounts for 2009/10 expressed serious concerns about the inadequacy of debt collection processes, and ICAS supports sensible moves to collect tax more effectively. However, the Institute wants to see the new approach applied with care, especially to ensure that only correct tax debts are pursued and only from the correct taxpayers.

Members encountering any difficulties with the new approach are asked to email us at tax@icas.org.uk with full details.
